Manchester United icon Denis Law has opened up about the heartbreaking reason he can no longer bring himself to visit Old Trafford. The 83-year-old Scottish legend, who scored 237 goals for the Red Devils between 1962 and 1973, admits the emotional toll of returning to the stadium where he created so many memories has become too much to bear.
A Legend's Painful Confession
In a rare and moving interview, Law revealed: "I can't go back. It's too painful." The football great, who was diagnosed with mixed dementia in 2021, explained how walking through the famous stadium without being able to properly remember his glory days would be devastating.
"I've got so many fantastic memories of playing at Old Trafford," Law told the Sunday Times. "But the problem is, I can't remember them."
The Special Bond with Sir Bobby
Law spoke poignantly about his friendship with fellow United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who also suffered from dementia before passing away last October. The two footballing giants formed part of United's legendary 'Holy Trinity' alongside George Best.
"Bobby was a fantastic player and a lovely man," Law recalled. "We had some great times together." His voice trailed off as he added: "At least, I think we did."
A Career to Remember
During his illustrious career, Law:
- Won two First Division titles with United
- Lifted the European Cup in 1968
- Was crowned European Footballer of the Year in 1964
- Scored 30 goals for Scotland
Despite his condition, Law remains United's third-highest goalscorer of all time, behind only Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.
The Bittersweet Reality
Law's wife, Diana, explained how her husband still watches United matches on television but struggles with recognition. "He'll say 'that's a good player' without realising it's someone like Marcus Rashford," she revealed.
The football world continues to show its support for Law, with United fans regularly singing his name during matches. While he may never walk through the Old Trafford gates again, his legacy remains firmly cemented in the club's history.
