Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of re-signing former goalkeeper David de Gea, according to The Sun. The 34-year-old spent 12 years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2023, but now a release clause in his Fiorentina contract could pave the way for a sensational return.
De Gea joined Fiorentina in 2024 after a season as a free agent and has been impressive in Serie A, helping the club qualify for the Conference League. His new contract, running until 2028, reportedly includes a clause allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum. United have been tipped off about this clause and are considering a move after current No.1 Andre Onana has failed to convince.
Onana has conceded 148 goals in two seasons at United, and manager Ruben Amorim recently warned him that his place is under threat. 'Andre is like the other players. They all have to win their place,' Amorim said. The club have already spent heavily on forwards this summer, but a return for De Gea would address their goalkeeping concerns.
De Gea recently returned to Old Trafford for a pre-season friendly and hinted at a reunion, writing on social media: 'Our paths may cross again.' The Spaniard made 545 appearances for United, winning the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and two League Cups during his first spell.
