David Raya admits La Liga dream in shock transfer admission

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has revealed his desire to play in La Liga before his career comes to an end. The Spanish shot-stopper, who has established himself as one of Europe's best since joining the Gunners, admits he dreams of returning to his native country.

Raya's current contract with Arsenal runs until the summer of 2028. While he insists he is in no rush to leave the north London club, he has not hidden his ambition to experience Spanish football at some point in the future.

Raya opens up on La Liga ambition

Speaking to Marca, Raya said: "Yes, I would love to. I would love to try out LaLiga."

"For now, I'm very happy here, but I would certainly like to experience the Spanish league," he added.

"I think it's a very competitive league. Perhaps, in the future, I could play for a Spanish club. I'm Spanish, and I'd love to play there — that's for sure."

Vindication for Arteta's decision

The former Brentford goalkeeper's move to Arsenal raised eyebrows when Mikel Arteta sanctioned the transfer and ousted popular keeper Aaron Ramsdale. However, Arteta's judgement has been thoroughly vindicated, with Raya firmly establishing himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe over the last three years.

Raya confident of Yashin trophy chance

Despite playing second fiddle to Unai Simon during Spain's triumphant World Cup campaign, Raya believes he is in contention to win the Yashin trophy at the upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony. This follows his starring role in Arsenal's Premier League title-winning success.

"I believe I've had a perfect year," he said. "Perhaps the only thing missing was playing in the World Cup."

"Every year since I arrived at Arsenal, I've continued to improve and hopefully that will keep happening," Raya continued.

"But I truly believe this year, by winning the Premier League and playing a decisive role in the league, the Champions League, and the Community Shield. It has been my best season as a professional, being impactful and lifting trophies."
