Dan Burn left out of England squad for Spain and Croatia clashes

Newcastle United captain Dan Burn has been left out of Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the Three Lions' final two UEFA Nations League group stage matches against Spain and Croatia later this month.

Burn has recently returned from an ankle injury that ruled him out of England's opening four Nations League matches in September and October. Tuchel had previously namechecked the defender as a player they would miss during that extended international camp earlier this year.

Recovery and Recent Form

The 34-year-old has returned to action this month and started each of Newcastle's last three matches in all competitions. However, he has not done enough to earn a recall to the England squad to build on his heroics from the World Cup.

Across Tuchel's first 18 months in the job, Burn became a key member of the England squad, winning 11 caps during that time. He became a cult hero during England's run to the semi-finals of the World Cup, with impressive cameos from the bench in the last 16 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium and the quarter-final win over Norway in Miami.

Newcastle Representation in Squad

While there was no place for Burn, Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall was included after excelling across his three appearances for his country in the last international break. Hall will look to build on that positive momentum this month, as will former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who scored in all three of his appearances for England in that camp.

England will host Croatia at Wembley Stadium on Thursday, November 12, before rounding off their Nations League group campaign with a trip to Madrid on Sunday, November 15, to take on world champions Spain. Tuchel's side need just a point across those two games to guarantee their place in the Nations League quarter-finals in March.
