Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has openly discussed the psychological impact of a barren run in front of goal on his star forward, Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian, a £62.5 million summer signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers, has found the net just once since his high-profile move.
The Pressure of the Price Tag
Cunha, 26, is set to return to the United squad for Thursday night's Premier League clash with West Ham at Old Trafford, having been sidelined for the last two matches. During his absence, Joshua Zirkzee has led the line for the Red Devils.
Despite becoming a fan favourite for his flamboyant style and confidence—drawing comparisons to club legend Eric Cantona—his only goal came in October against Brighton. Amorim conceded that the lack of goals has become a distraction for the player.
Amorim's Candid Assessment
'He has more levels to reach,' stated Amorim. 'He is at a different club, with different pressure. He was struggling because he wasn't scoring. He was thinking too much about the numbers, but the influence he has on the team is important for us.'
The United boss also referenced the issue of 'abuse on social media', though sources later indicated this was a casual remark based on a broader question about online attacks. Amorim elaborated on his personal approach to such pressure.
'It's normal in any profession when you are exposed to it. I don't read it, I protect myself. I don't watch television when they talk about Manchester United,' he said. 'My feeling as a coach is enough, I don't need other feelings. The only way is to protect myself.'
Team News for West Ham Clash
Alongside confirming Cunha's return, Amorim provided an update on other squad members. He confirmed that Benjamin Sesko and Harry Maguire remain unavailable due to injury, with two further players considered doubts.
'I'm not going to say (who) today because that will tell you the way we are going to approach the game, but the rest of the squad is okay,' Amorim added.
The spotlight now turns to Old Trafford on Thursday, where Matheus Cunha will be hoping to end his goal drought and justify his substantial transfer fee in front of the home supporters.
