Chelsea's Marc Cucurella Criticises Club's Decision to Sack Enzo Maresca
Cucurella Slams Chelsea's Decision to Sack Maresca

Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella has openly disagreed with the club's decision to part ways with manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year, stating he would not have made such a move and highlighting its significant impact on the squad.

Cucurella's Critique of Chelsea's Managerial Change

In a candid interview with The Athletic, the Spanish defender expressed his disapproval of Chelsea's choice to sack Maresca in January, following a breakdown in relations between the manager and the club's hierarchy. Cucurella emphasised that the timing was particularly detrimental, suggesting it would have been better to wait until the end of the season to allow for proper preparation.

Instability and Its Consequences

Cucurella pointed to "the instability around the club" as a direct result of Maresca's departure, which he believes has disrupted the team's rhythm. He noted that the squad first had a caretaker manager, former under-21s coach Calum McFarlane, before Liam Rosenior was appointed as the new permanent manager just days later. This rapid turnover, according to Cucurella, left little time for players to adapt to new ideas and strategies.

The defender explained, "To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season. The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell."

Mixed Results Under New Management

Since Maresca's exit and Rosenior's arrival, Chelsea have experienced a period of inconsistent form. While Rosenior initially made a positive start at Stamford Bridge, results have declined in recent weeks. The team has suffered losses to Newcastle and Everton, as well as a record-equalling 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the Champions League.

These setbacks have left Chelsea in sixth place in the Premier League, one point behind fifth-placed Liverpool and outside the Champions League qualification spots. Cucurella acknowledged Rosenior's efforts, praising him for handling the group well and having good football ideas, but lamented the lack of training time to implement these plans effectively.

Cucurella's Personal Experience at Chelsea

Having joined Chelsea in 2022 for over £60 million, Cucurella has witnessed six permanent managerial appointments during his time at the club. Despite this, he described Maresca as "the most important" of these managers, crediting him with fostering strong team bonds through successes like winning the Club World Cup.

"When a manager gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you'd die for him," Cucurella added, underscoring the deep respect he holds for Maresca.

Looking Ahead for Chelsea

As Chelsea navigate the current international break, they are set to resume club football with an FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale on 4 April, followed by a crucial Premier League match against Manchester City on 12 April. These fixtures will be critical in determining their European qualification hopes for next season.

Cucurella's comments shed light on the internal challenges facing Chelsea, as they strive to regain stability and competitive form under Rosenior's leadership. The defender's critique highlights the broader issues of managerial turnover and its effects on team performance in top-flight football.
