Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage is facing mounting pressure after his side's 5-0 defeat by Brighton, their heaviest loss in 70 years. The Eagles conceded three goals in the opening 10 minutes at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
Palace have won just two of their first seven Premier League games under Sage, and Standard Sport understands there is a growing belief within the dressing room that the Frenchman could be relieved of his duties.
Sage's struggles at Selhurst Park
Sage was appointed as Oliver Glasner's replacement over the summer following a successful stint with Lens, where he guided the club to a first-ever Coupe de France trophy and a second-place finish in Ligue 1.
Despite a summer of change at Palace, Sage has struggled to implement his ideas, and the defensive collapse against Brighton means they have now shipped more goals than any other Premier League team this season.
Player disillusionment and criticism
Standard Sport understands that several players are disillusioned with Sage's methods and lack of communication. As early as the start of September, concerns were raised about his style of play, and his decision to drop centre-back Jaydee Canvot after a 3-2 home defeat by Ipswich drew criticism.
After a 0-0 draw with Leeds, Sage was given more time to get his methods across and address the team's defensive issues. However, Palace have continued to look vulnerable, conceding eight goals in their last two games against Brighton and Lyon.
Critical week ahead
Sage's future is under serious scrutiny as Palace prepare to face Besiktas and Newcastle this week, with the club already sounding out potential replacements. Positive results would ease the pressure, but as it stands, he heads into a critical week with his job on the line.
