Forgotten Newcastle signing Antonio Cordero sends timely reminder with Cadiz double
Cordero sends Newcastle reminder with Cadiz double

Antonio Cordero scored twice as Cadiz thrashed Leganes 4-0, sending a timely reminder of his talents to Newcastle United during the international break. The winger, who joined Newcastle last summer from Malaga, took his season tally to three goals and one assist with a two-goal salvo in the win.

Cordero shines in Spain's Segunda Division

Spain's Segunda Division remained in action during the international break, offering Cordero the stage to impress. He opened the scoring with a smart left-footed finish from point blank range in the first half, then added the third goal of the game by sweeping a right-footed effort low into the far corner.

Cordero was one of previous sporting director Paul Mitchell's rare signings at the club. He spent last season on loan with Belgian side Westerlo for the first half of the campaign before joining Cadiz for the second half. Such was the success of his stay at the Nuevo Mirandilla that he re-joined the club on a season-long loan deal this summer.

Cordero's delight at Cadiz return

Despite Cadiz's indifferent start to the season, Cordero has impressed on the wing. He expressed his delight at how his return to Cadiz has started so far this term.

"I think that, both individually and collectively, the team played its best match," Cordero told Cadiz's club website. "We'd been playing well, but we were missing the most important thing. There's no better way to start than in front of the fans."

"I was really looking forward to doing it again in front of our fans and I'm very happy. The atmosphere is very good and the most important thing is that, whatever happens, we're all in this together. I always want to score. Whether I play or am on the bench is the manager's decision, and I try to give my all from wherever I am. The manager is pushing us hard in every training session and I appreciate it. From the bench, he told me to work until the very end."

Other Newcastle loanees in action

Anthony Munda continued his promising development with an eighth successive League Two start for Swindon Town, but the match was overshadowed in the build-up by the antics of Robins manager Ian Holloway. Swindon are without a win in their last four league matches and Holloway is coming under pressure after a disappointing end to last season. That pressure told in a bizarre pre-match press conference that saw the former Blackpool and Crystal Palace boss beat his chest while shouting: "D M W. Dead man walking."

Harrison Ashby played the full 90 minutes as Luton Town beat Colchester United on penalties to move to the top of their Jersey Mike's Trophy group, following a 1-1 draw at the Colchester Community Stadium.
