Swansea City have confirmed that winger Cameron Congreve has signed for Belgian side Westerlo for an undisclosed fee understood to be seven figures. The Wales international has signed a four-year deal at the club, and the deal taking him to Europe includes several add-ons, including a sell-on clause. Swansea will also be entitled to buy back the 22-year-old should they be able to match any future offer made for the player.
Congreve's Swansea Career
Congreve made his senior debut under Russell Martin as an 18-year-old against Blackpool in March 2022. He spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan with League Two Bromley before a stint at Scottish side Dundee. In total, he made 19 appearances for the Swans.
Ward's Departure Confirmed
Meanwhile, Vitor Matos has confirmed that Joel Ward won't be returning to Swansea, following the expiration of his short-term deal. The right-back joined in January for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign, and played 16 times in all competitions, although just three of those outings were starts. The club had confirmed they were in talks over a possible new deal when they released their retained list at the end of the campaign. However, it seems Ward won't be coming back to SA1.
"Joel was really important for us character-wise last season," Matos said. "He came in during a moment of the season where we were really in need of someone with his experience and leadership. He could cover more than one position as well. This season, we decided that we can go in different directions."
"He will have a brilliant future in what he decides to be, even if he is a manager or another role in football, or even not in football because he is a wonderful person with really good values," added Matos. "I just wish him all the best."
Matos Aiming for Premier League
Vitor Matos says reaching the Premier League is "always the goal". The Swans are bidding to bring themselves closer to the play-off picture this season, particularly with the number of teams being extended to six. It means Swansea would now only have to finish eighth to reach the play-offs, and potentially have a crack at promotion to the top flight.
Speaking after the pre-season win over Leganes, Matos said: "When the club have ambition, when the owners have ambition, when the managers have ambition, when the players have ambition, I think that's always the goal. But at the same time, the most important thing is what we can do every day. It doesn't matter if I come here and I say, 'yeah, the goal is to go to the Premier League when I'm here for four seasons' if we don't work with that mentality every day."
