Como vs Man United weather latest as Champions League tie faces threat

Manchester United's Champions League match against Como 1907 is under threat of postponement as severe weather hits northern Italy, with an orange warning for rain in place across the Lombardy region where the club is based.

The Red Devils have travelled to mainland Europe for their third Champions League fixture of the season, but heavy rainfall has left the pitch at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia waterlogged and conditions treacherous. The rain arrived on Tuesday and has continued into Wednesday morning, with authorities urging vigilance due to the hazardous conditions.

Rainfall and Stadium Concerns

Forecasts predict 64mm of rainfall before kick-off, and with only one of the stadium's four stands providing shelter, supporters are bracing for a sodden evening. Despite the additional threat of lightning, Como remain optimistic that the pitch will hold up and postponement can be avoided.

United have recorded one victory and one defeat in their opening two Champions League fixtures. Manager Michael Carrick dismissed any worries over the weather ahead of the match, saying: "No, nothing immediate from me, we're used to the rain. We'll make the most of it!"

Team News and Selection Concerns

The Manchester club have secured just two victories all campaign and face a Como side managed by former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas, who feature ex-United defender Willy Kambwala in their ranks. Carrick's squad trained on Tuesday with six players absent, which could significantly influence team selection. Ayden Heaven, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu were the missing figures.

Carrick also insisted that, despite overseeing the poorest opening to a season in 40 years, he senses support from senior figures at the club. "I don't need any reassurance. It's pretty clear. I know the role, I know my responsibilities, I don't need anyone to tell me when it's going well or when it needs to be better," he said. "I know the realities and have no problem with that. I know we got to win football games for everything to flow and fit into place. I feel backed, yeah, why wouldn't I? I have a really good relationship with everyone at the football club. There are no issues on that side."
