Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has undergone surgery after fracturing his ankle during Saturday's 4-0 Premier League win over Manchester City. The 28-year-old Italian is expected to be sidelined for months.
The injury occurred in the first half following a collision with City forward Savinho. Vicario received on-field treatment and continued playing the remainder of the match, but complained of significant pain after the final whistle. Subsequent tests revealed a fracture, leading to an operation on Monday.
A club statement read: 'We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has on Monday undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle. He suffered the injury during Saturday’s Premier League victory at Manchester City. Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training.'
Vicario took to Instagram to update fans, saying: 'Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect. I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one. I needed surgery. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.'
The news came as a surprise to Vicario's teammates, who were unaware of the severity of the injury. Head coach Ange Postecoglou will now rely on veteran goalkeeper Fraser Forster as deputy. Vicario's ability to play out from the back is crucial to Tottenham's style of play.
