Cole Palmer apologises after red card in Chelsea defeat

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer has apologised on social media after being sent off during Saturday's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old was shown a red card in the 80th minute after receiving a second yellow for standing on former Blues midfielder Conor Gallagher in what was described as a 'naughty' challenge.

Two bookings in quick succession

Palmer had already been booked nine minutes earlier for clattering into Spurs midfielder Matues Fernandes as he tried to get up from the floor. The Portuguese midfielder had handled the ball on the ground to stop a Chelsea break, leaving Palmer incensed. Fernandes was also booked for his part in the incident.

After the match, Palmer took to his Instagram story to apologise, writing: "Not good enough by me. Live 'n' learn! Apologies. Onto the next."

Neville criticises Palmer's actions

Speaking on commentary, former England defender Gary Neville criticised Palmer's conduct, saying: "Cole Palmer's lost his head in these last few minutes. He was lucky to avoid a red card earlier, and that one is a no-brainer. To do that five minutes after the challenge on Fernandes is just silly. He sticks his studs in, he knows exactly what he is doing. Naughty, really naughty."

Spurs secure first win at Stamford Bridge since 2016

An own goal from Mike Penders and a strike from Mathys Tel gave Roberto De Zerbi's side their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2016. Chelsea were already a goal down when Palmer received his second yellow card.
