Coco Gauff revealed she was involved in a 'mini car crash' on her way to the French Open, shortly before she defeated Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. The defending champion told TNT Sports that her driver was directed by police to go through a barrier that was still down, causing a collision that left the car undrivable.
Gauff, 22, said she spilt her juice in the impact but was unharmed. She and her team then took a taxi to a nearby stadium before being driven to Roland Garros in a tournament car. The drama continued when her dress got stuck just before she went on court, requiring her physio to help remove it in the bathroom.
Despite the distractions, Gauff said the incident helped her not overthink the match. 'I'm just happy to be here in one piece,' she added. On her performance, she admitted to being 'a little nervous' but found her calm to ease through to the second round.
Gauff will face Mayar Sherif next as she aims to retain her title. The tournament has been hit by scorching temperatures, with Gauff seen cooling her rackets in a court-side cooler. Rival Aryna Sabalenka said the heat suits her aggressive game, particularly her improved net play.
