Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana, a violation of his probation. The 26-year-old was booked on Tuesday afternoon in Dallas County, Texas, and is scheduled for release on 16 June.
The court-ordered jail term means Rice will miss organised team activities and a mandatory minicamp with the Chiefs. Court documents obtained by KSHB 41 News in Kansas City confirmed the positive test for THC. The Chiefs have not yet commented publicly on the matter.
Rice was on probation for his role in a street-racing crash on a Dallas highway in March 2024, which left multiple people injured. He pleaded guilty to two third-degree felonies in July last year and received a five-year probation sentence, with a 30-day jail term deferred.
Prosecutors said Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph when he made “multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic” and struck other vehicles. After the crash, he allegedly failed to check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles and fled on foot.
Before the 2024 season, Rice said he had “completely changed” as a result of the incident, which also brought a six-game suspension from the NFL. “You have to learn from things like that,” he said. “I’ve learned and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.”
Rice has played parts of three seasons for the Chiefs, helping them win the Super Bowl in the 2023 campaign. Last season, he caught 53 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns in eight games. A second-round pick in 2023, he has 156 career receptions for 1,797 yards and 14 scores across 28 games.
