Chelsea Manager Liam Rosenior Drops Robert Sanchez for Aston Villa Clash
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has been dropped to the bench for the Blues' away Premier League match against Aston Villa. This decision comes after his struggles in Chelsea's recent 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, where he misjudged a corner leading to a goal.
Rosenior's Goalkeeper Philosophy and Team Selection
Manager Liam Rosenior, speaking to TNT Sports before the match, explained his choice to start Filip Jorgensen instead. "He's played very good in training. The way I work with goalkeepers, I don't have an outright number one," Rosenior stated. "I want competition in every area. He's been waiting very patiently for his chance. Now I've given it to him this evening."
Rosenior, 41, is now the third Chelsea manager to drop Sanchez in the Premier League, following Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca. Despite Sanchez enjoying one of his best seasons at Stamford Bridge, his error against Arsenal proved costly, with Jurrien Timber scoring from close range after the Spaniard failed to claim a corner.
Defending Sanchez and Analysing the Arsenal Defeat
Prior to the match, Rosenior defended Sanchez, focusing on team performance rather than individual blame. "I think each player contributes to the overall performance and functionality of your team," he said. "So yes, the first few minutes we had a few nervy spells. The fact that we played out from the back affected their press and gave us space in the areas that we wanted."
He added, "I don't want to single out players and say what they can or can't improve. It's about the functionality of the team. I don't think anyone can say in the moment, other than the two set play goals, my team did not function well in the game." Rosenior highlighted that Chelsea performed well against league leaders Arsenal, attributing the loss to failing to manage key moments.
Preparing for a Tough Aston Villa Challenge
Looking ahead to the match against Aston Villa, Rosenior acknowledged the threat posed by their attacking prowess. Aston Villa have scored more goals from distance than any other Premier League side this season. "In terms of preparing for Aston Villa, the reason they score great goals is because they have great attacking players," Rosenior noted.
He detailed the preparation, saying, "We show individual clips to our players. Our players know the strengths and weaknesses of each individual we're up against. It's going to be a very difficult game. They're very clinical in terms of the xG that they create, in terms of the values of the goals that they score. They're a good team."
Rosenior emphasised the need for readiness, stating, "It's going to be tough because they're going to have a reaction from their last result. We have to make sure we're prepared for a very difficult game." This match marks a crucial test for Chelsea as they aim to bounce back from their defeat to Arsenal.
