New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has approved the departure of four first-team players as part of a major squad overhaul this summer. The most high-profile exit is left-back Marc Cucurella, who has joined Real Madrid in a move that caught many off guard given his strong performances last season. Cucurella, who had previously criticised the club's management under former boss Enzo Maresca, opted to return to Spain after five years in the UK, with Chelsea reportedly generating a £17.5m profit on the transfer.
Also departing is winger Tyrique George, who completed an £18m move to Everton, rising to £24m with add-ons. George spent half of last season on loan at Goodison Park and impressed manager David Moyes. Alonso sanctioned the sale given Chelsea's depth in wide areas, with Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto, Estevao and new signing Morgan Rogers all providing options.
Alejandro Garnacho has joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan with a £42.5m mandatory buyout clause if certain conditions are met. Speaking at his first press conference, Alonso confirmed the club had spoken with sporting directors about Garnacho's future and expressed hope that a move would materialise. Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos also left, completing a £48m transfer to Manchester United earlier this month after requesting to depart due to fierce competition for places.
On the recruitment front, Chelsea have secured England international Morgan Rogers for £117m, 19-year-old winger Geovany Quenda for £40m, and 21-year-old defender Marco Palestra for £47m. The rebuild, led by Alonso after his appointment on July 1, is expected to continue with further arrivals and departures before the transfer window closes.
