Chelsea Legend Bobby Tambling Dies Aged 84

Bobby Tambling, the legendary Chelsea forward who held the club's all-time goalscoring record for 47 years, has died at the age of 84. His former club Crosshaven announced his passing, stating that Tambling had been living with dementia in recent years.

Tambling scored 202 goals in 370 appearances for Chelsea, a record that stood until Frank Lampard surpassed it in 2013. He made his debut at 17 in 1959 and was a key figure in the 1965 League Cup triumph, scoring in the final against Leicester. His feat of five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966 remains a Chelsea record.

Internationally, Tambling earned three caps for England. After leaving Chelsea in 1970, he played for Crystal Palace and later moved to the Republic of Ireland, where he settled in Cork and managed local clubs including Cork Celtic, Cork City, and Crosshaven.

Crosshaven paid tribute on X, calling Tambling "a true Chelsea legend and an even more wonderful human being." The statement added: "His passion for football was absolutely infectious... Bobby leaves an enormous hole in all our lives."

Tambling's humility and close relationship with Frank Lampard were well known. Of Lampard breaking his record, Tambling once joked: "I say 'come on Frank, rush along'. And my partner would always say 'come on Frank, don't take any more penalties'."
