Chelsea Triumph in Seven-Goal WSL Spectacle Against Aston Villa
Sjoeke Nusken emerged as the hero for Chelsea, netting a late winner to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory over Aston Villa in the Women's Super League. This crucial win at Kingsmeadow propelled Chelsea back into second place in the league standings, intensifying their pursuit of a Women's Champions League spot for the upcoming season.
Dramatic Match Unfolds with Early Goals and Comebacks
The match kicked off with a rapid start as Aston Villa seized an early advantage. Within the first two minutes, Lucy Bronze's misplaced pass allowed Chasity Grant to combine with Lynn Wilms, slotting the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton at the near post. Chelsea responded in the 20th minute when Sam Kerr broke through Villa's defence, meeting Nusken's precise pass to equalise from the left side of the box.
This ignited a frenetic seven-minute period where Chelsea surged ahead. Naomi Girma scored her first-ever WSL goal to put Chelsea in front, followed by Lauren James extending the lead to 3-1. However, Aston Villa mounted a spirited comeback, with Kirsty Hanson scoring a quickfire brace from crosses delivered by Wilms, levelling the match at 3-3 before the 35-minute mark.
Second Half Dominance and Decisive Strike
After the halftime interval, the game settled into a more controlled pace, with Chelsea dictating play. Despite Alyssa Thompson missing a close-range header over the crossbar, the Blues maintained pressure. In the 82nd minute, Nusken delivered the decisive blow, firing home the winning goal to clinch all three points for Chelsea.
Post-match, Nusken reflected on the intense encounter, stating to Sky Sports, "I think it was a tough game for us, and we are very happy we could score at the end. The last 10 minutes we did a lot of pressure, so I think in the end it was a deserved win. They are a really good team. They scored three goals against us so I think they're showing what they can." She added, "It was a tough game, really intense. Aston Villa showed what they could do. We fought well in the end and I think it was a deserved win."
League Implications and Other WSL Results
With this victory, Chelsea, under manager Sonia Bompastor, now trail WSL leaders Manchester City by nine points. The team's focus remains on securing a top position to qualify for the Women's Champions League. In other Sunday WSL fixtures, West Ham United drew 1-1 at home against London City Lionesses, while bottom-placed Leicester City faced Brighton & Hove Albion in a later match.
Lauren James was awarded Player of the Match for her goal and assists, highlighting Chelsea's collective effort in a match characterised by high drama and strategic midfield balance, as noted by Nusken: "We tried to keep the balance [between attack and defence] with our midfield. It was a balance between going up and down with our midfield but I think we did it really well and we didn't concede any transitions in the end."
