Cesc Fabregas has said he "would be crazy" to concentrate on speculation linking him with the vacant Chelsea managerial role. The Spaniard, who played for the Blues between 2014 and 2019, has emerged as a potential candidate for the Stamford Bridge hotseat in the wake of Liam Rosenior's sacking earlier this week.
Rosenior's Departure and Interim Appointment
Rosenior managed just three months of his six-and-a-half-year contract before he was dismissed by Chelsea on Wednesday, following an uninspired run of form in the Premier League. The club explained: "This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season." Calum McFarlane has stepped up as interim head coach and will lead the club until the end of the season as Chelsea aim for European qualification and the FA Cup.
Fabregas Focused on Como
Fabregas, now head coach of Como, has been linked with a return to Chelsea, but the 38-year-old has made it clear that his sole focus is on his current team for the remainder of the season. Speaking during his pre-Genoa press conference, Fabregas stated: "Nothing to say about that. It'd be stupid to think about that now, my focus is on the next game against Genoa. I believe I will continue my chapter as Como head coach and focus on the next games. I would be crazy to think of anything else rather than these next five games and getting my team into Europe for the first time in history."
Como President's Stance
Como president Mirwan Suwarso has since indicated he will not stand in Fabregas' way should he choose to return to Chelsea at the end of the season. Suwarso told City AM: "If that makes him happy, that's him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible but at the end of the day we don't own him and he's free to go to Chelsea if he wishes."
Fabregas' Managerial Career
Fabregas, who also played for Arsenal and Barcelona, holds a minority stake in Como after joining the club in the twilight of his playing career in 2022. He transitioned into management the following year as an interim coach before signing a permanent deal. In his first full season, Fabregas led Como to a 10th-place finish in Serie A, and the club is now fighting for Champions League qualification for 2026/27.
Chelsea's Current Situation
Chelsea, meanwhile, are at major risk of missing out on European football next season. The Blues sit eighth in the Premier League standings, 10 points adrift of the top five with just four games remaining. Their immediate focus is on the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
