Celtic's Europa League qualification hopes are hanging by a thread after a 3-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo on matchday three. Martin O'Neill's side, still searching for their first point in the group, failed to build on Sunday's 7-1 Premiership thrashing of Hearts.
Baur scores but Celtic collapse
The opening 45 minutes offered little quality, with the biggest incident a penalty shout for the hosts. Callum Osmand went down under contact from Javi Rueda, but no penalty was given, a decision that angered Celtic legends Stiliyan Petrov and Neil Lennon on commentary.
After the interval, Celtic came out strongly and took the lead. Haissem Hassan beat Marcos Alonso on the right, and his deflected cross found Mika Baur, who side-footed past Ionut Radu for his fourth club goal. Benjamin Nygren and Liam Scales both went close to adding a second, but it never came.
Rodriguez double sinks Hoops
Celta defender Javier Rodriguez then scored twice in three minutes. First, he headed home from Hugo Alvarez's free kick, getting between Dane Murray and Scales. Then he lashed in a drive from outside the box after Celtic failed to clear their lines. The visitors, who had taken zero points from clashes with AC Omonia and Juventus, got their campaign up and running.
Celtic now face a trip to Hibs on Sunday. Here's how Record Sport rated the players at Parkhead.
Player ratings
Sam Johnstone - 5: Surprisingly started in place of Viljami Sinisalo, having been dropped after the 3-0 loss to Rangers. Could do little about the two goals, especially Rodriguez's powerful winner.
Colby Donovan - 5: Failed to cut out a pass that allowed Mattias Svanberg to reach the byline, leading to the winner. Got into the box late but his shot didn't threaten Radu, and he picked up a silly booking.
Dane Murray - 6: Handled Ferran Jutgla well but was undone by Alvarez's set piece. Will hope to keep his place if Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty remain out.
Liam Scales - 5: Saw a looping header hit the crossbar, then was caught out as Rodriguez headed the equaliser. Harshly booked late on.
Kieran Tierney - 6: A quiet night; not troubled defensively but unable to get forward much. Positive: he played the full 90 minutes for just the fourth time this season.
Callum McGregor - 5: Looked in control after the restart but tired as the half wore on, with Celta playing with ease in the final third.
Mika Baur - 7: Scored his second goal of the group stage with a cool finish. Along with Camilo Duran, one of only two summer signings to hit the ground running.
Benjamin Nygren - 5: Went close with a rasping shot saved by Radu but was otherwise ineffectual, with fans still accusing him of going missing in big games.
Haissem Hassan - 6: A rare start and a positive display, his run leading to the goal. Replaced by Kasper Hogh with 15 minutes left.
Callum Osmand - 6: Caught the eye since returning from injury, but limped off just before the hour with a suspected hamstring injury.
Camilo Duran - 4: Started up front again but, unlike against Hearts, offered no focal point. Replaced by Sebastian Tounekti with 10 minutes left.
Substitutes
James Forrest (Osmand, 58) - 4: Provided attacking threat but spent more time tracking back as Celta gained a foothold.
Kasper Hogh (Hassan, 73) - 3: Hardly got a kick; now 11 games since his hat-trick against Kilmarnock.
Sebastian Tounekti (Duran, 80) - 2: A short cameo as Celtic pushed for an equaliser.
Oliver Sorensen (Baur, 80) - 2: Has yet to find his feet since a loan from Parma; booked in the final minute for a late tackle.
