Celtic brink of unwanted record as O'Neill faces Hibs

Celtic are on the verge of an unwanted piece of history if Martin O'Neill suffers another defeat this weekend, with the club's Europa League loss to Celta Vigo on Thursday marking their fifth defeat in the last seven matches across all competitions.

Despite sitting four points clear at the top of the Premiership, pressure is mounting on the Scottish champions amid a dire run of results. The Hoops have lost twice to Rangers, as well as to Ferencvaros and Benfica, while seeing off Motherwell and Hearts in the league.

Second slump since 1991

This is only the second time since 1991 that Celtic have slumped to this low point, with Wilfried Nancy achieving the same sequence during his nightmare tenure. The Frenchman became the shortest-serving manager in the club's history when he replaced O'Neill in December 2025, only to be axed 33 days later after overseeing just eight games and losing six of them.

O'Neill was drafted back in to salvage a Double, but the veteran gaffer could now steer the club to an even worse run this weekend. Should Celtic lose to Hibs at Easter Road, it would be the first time since 1953 that the Glasgow giants have lost six of seven matches.

Nancy's warning proves right

The Hoops go in as heavy favourites to see off the Premiership's bottom side, but Marink Reedijk will be looking to stun Celtic and secure his first win as boss. Since leaving Celtic, Nancy has spoken out about the players struggling after conceding a goal, an issue that has proven to be the case on several key occasions this term, from the Champions League collapse to LASK to Thursday night's Europa League loss.

Speaking in August, the former Columbus Crew gaffer said: "When I arrived, well, I'm not Martin O'Neill. I have different methods. However, I didn't want to change them much. Everything was going well in terms of the game. But as soon as we conceded a goal, we started to get nervous."

"I wouldn't have had the same narrative if things hadn't gone well in terms of performance. I don't like 'ifs' or 'shoulds,' but the reality is that we lost games with 4.2 and 3.8 xG."
