Celtic boost as Celta's Iglesias and Starfelt ruled out

Celtic have received a significant boost ahead of Thursday's Europa League meeting with Celta Vigo, as the Spanish side will be without World Cup winner Borja Iglesias and former Hoops defender Carl Starfelt.

Both clubs are winless after their opening two matches in the league phase of the competition, making the Parkhead clash a crucial one for Martin O'Neill's side as they seek their first three points.

Iglesias out for six weeks with calf injury

Borja Iglesias, the 33-year-old striker who was part of Spain's squad for their triumph in the USA this summer, suffered a calf injury during training. The former Real Betis forward, who has won nine caps for his country, will be sidelined for the next six weeks.

Iglesias had previously announced he no longer wished to be considered for Spain unless disgraced former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales resigned, returning to the national setup after Rubiales left the association.

Starfelt also misses Parkhead return

Carl Starfelt, who won five trophies in a two-year spell with Celtic, will also miss the game due to a thigh injury. The Swedish international defender underwent an MRI scan following the international break, which revealed a muscle tear in the myotendinous junction of the semimembranosus muscle, affecting the proximal tendon of his right thigh.

Celta Vigo confirmed the extent of Iglesias's injury in a statement: "Borja has suffered a myotendinous rupture in the soleus muscle of his left leg, which will force him to miss the next six weeks of competition. His return is not expected until after the international break in November."

Celta are also likely to be without Miguel Roman and Jones El-Abdellaoui for the trip to Glasgow.
