Michael Carrick Backs Harry Maguire for Manchester United Future

Michael Carrick has publicly endorsed Harry Maguire's continued significance to Manchester United, as speculation mounts over the defender's future at Old Trafford. The centre-back is currently in his seventh season with the club, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, this could potentially mark his final chapter in a United shirt.

Maguire, who recently received a 15-month suspended jail sentence after being found guilty of non-serious assault in Mykonos in 2020, is reportedly keen to extend his stay in Manchester. His role in the squad had appeared to diminish under former manager Ruben Amorim, with Maguire starting just four Premier League matches before Amorim's dismissal in January. However, a resurgence has been evident since Carrick took over as interim boss.

Resurgence Under Carrick's Leadership

Since Carrick's appointment, Maguire has started all eight league games for United, with the only defeat coming in a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday night. This return to the starting lineup has seen the defender produce some of his finest performances in a United jersey, reigniting his prospects for a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Carrick's future at United remains uncertain, as it is unclear whether he will be offered the permanent head coaching role. However, if he does secure the position, a new contract for Maguire is likely to be a priority, given his recent comments praising the player.

Carrick's Praise for Maguire's Experience

Ahead of United's victory over Crystal Palace last week, Carrick spoke highly of Maguire, stating, "Harry's an impressive character. He's had a great career so far and hopefully there's a lot more to come." He emphasised the value of experience within the squad, noting, "Within the squad there is that balance, you want that younger potential and excitement, but you need the sweet spot in the middle with players at the peak, and experience is massive. It's hard to put a price on how valuable that can be."

When asked if Maguire is currently playing the best football of his career, Carrick responded, "There is a case [for that]." He elaborated on the benefits of experience, saying, "As your career goes when you're a young player and everything is fresh, you're fearless and there's not many scars there. You get to your peak years and you feel good and everything is there, but you've had a few ups and downs. You get towards the later times and the experience should make you a better player, we've seen that with Harry's performances of late."

Looking Ahead for Manchester United

Following their defeat at St James' Park, United will not return to action until March 15, when they host Aston Villa, a fellow top-four contender who suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday. This break provides a moment for reflection on squad decisions, including Maguire's future, as Carrick and the club weigh their options moving forward.
