Michael Carrick has cautioned Manchester United against making a 'knee-jerk' decision over the managerial position, despite his impressive start as interim boss. The former midfielder has won all three matches since replacing Ruben Amorim last month, prompting speculation he could stay beyond the season.
However, Carrick insists his chances of landing the job permanently have not changed. 'Nothing's changed,' he said in his pre-match press conference. 'I'm fully aware of the role I'm doing here and the responsibility I've got. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season – if that's me, if that's somebody else.'
The wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham have boosted United's Champions League hopes, but Carrick warned the club's hierarchy not to be swayed by short-term results. 'The results of a short period of time don't change it,' he added. 'If they have changed that, there is something wrong. It can't be so knee-jerk.'
United had planned a thorough recruitment process to find Amorim's successor, and Carrick stressed the importance of steady progress. 'You kind of know that football can twist and turn just as quickly, so we have got to keep level and keep focusing on what we need to do,' he said.
