Michael Carrick has been told that two upcoming Premier League fixtures will decide his future as Manchester United manager, with January transfer plans emerging that could reshape the squad's defensive options.
United sit 13th in the Premier League after seven matches, closer to the relegation places than to the Champions League positions. The 1-1 draw at Leeds extended the club's run without victory to six matches across all competitions, though Carrick described the performance as a "fresh start."
Carrick's Sack Timeline
Gary Neville has said Carrick cannot afford for United to remain in mid-table come January. Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: "Fifth [which will probably be enough for Champions League football] is a must for Michael Carrick to continue to grow and Manchester United continue to grow with investment."
He added: "If they're 13th in January, he's got a problem because then you are what you are. Whereas I think it's still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, 'Okay, still early in the season.' You can't say that after 15 games."
Neville believes Carrick warrants additional time in his maiden campaign as permanent manager but says United must show improvement quickly. He identified the next fixtures as critical: "It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that."
January Plans Put Trio at Risk
United's intentions for the upcoming transfer window cast doubt over the prospects of the squad's experienced defensive players. According to Sky Sports, United are making centre-backs and left-backs a priority as part of their squad overhaul, having strengthened midfield during the summer and their attacking options 12 months previously.
There was frustration during the summer that United fell short of securing a replacement - or at least a viable alternative - to Luke Shaw, so it comes as little surprise that a left-back features prominently on their wishlist. United had targeted Lewis Hall but Newcastle refused to sanction a sale before tying the full-back down to a new contract.
United are additionally casting their eye over centre-back options. The future of Lisandro Martinez, whose contract expires next summer, has been thrown into uncertainty following his recent outburst in which he criticised director of football Jason Wilcox over the club's summer recruitment. The Argentine subsequently issued an apology and featured against Leeds.
Defence Remains the Priority
Harry Maguire is 33 and is similarly out of contract at the season's conclusion, while Matthijs de Ligt has endured injury problems, though he is fit once more following back surgery.
There is a strong case to be made that United also require reinforcement in attacking areas, both centrally and out wide. However, for the time being, the defensive department appears to be the club's main priority.
