Michael Carrick has been advised to adopt a key trait from Sir Alex Ferguson if he secures the permanent manager role at Manchester United. The interim boss has impressed with nine wins in 13 games, but faces a busy European schedule next season.
Steve Bruce Endorses Carrick
Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce, who played 417 games under Ferguson, believes Carrick is in pole position for the job. "I sincerely hope Michael Carrick gets the Manchester United job," Bruce said on The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show. "He’s certainly put himself in pole position. He gets the club because he’s been there and played for it."
Ferguson's Winning Mentality
Bruce highlighted Ferguson's meticulous preparation and winning mindset as crucial lessons. "Sir Alex was huge on preparation," Bruce said. "He was the start of rotation, 25-30 years ago. He would say, 'We’re Man United and we are the best team, and you are the best players, and we’ve got to prove that week in and week out.'" Carrick, who played 464 times for United, spent seven seasons under Ferguson.
England's World Cup Hopes
Bruce also commented on England's chances at the World Cup, expressing concern over player burnout. "The French are very good again, the Spanish, and you’re never going to rule out one of the South American teams," he said. "England must have a chance because of the personnel we’ve got. I just have this thing about all the lads who play in the Premier League. They’ve played so much football."
As for his own future, Bruce said he is likely done with club management but remains open to an international role. "Never say never, but I believe that I’ve had my time in management. Maybe something like an international job."
