Michael Carrick branded Manchester United's performance "unacceptable" after the Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup, blowing a two-goal lead against Brighton at Old Trafford. The home side were booed off the pitch following the defeat, which saw Brighton advance to the fourth round, where they will face either Manchester City or Norwich.
Fans vent fury with X-rated chant
According to the Manchester Evening News, supporters directed a chant of "what the f****** hell was that" at the players as they left the field. Carrick, who took responsibility for the collapse, delivered a blunt post-match interview on Sky Sports.
"We can't accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that's on me," Carrick said. "We have a big game on Sunday that we have to prepare for. We're out of this competition and we have to go back to winning football matches."
Manager accepts supporters' frustration
Carrick acknowledged the fans' anger at the final whistle, saying: "Yeah of course, that's pretty obvious! I totally understand the feelings of the supporters...We have to accept it. I totally accept it."
"It's on me ultimately: as a team what we look like, how we play and what results you get. I take that. I'll take the praise, I'll take the criticism and the upset. I totally understand it for the way the game went. We have got to win games," he added. United now turn their attention to Sunday's fixture as they look to return to winning ways.
