Rangers are considering a move for Michael Carrick as they search for a new manager, after Steven Gerrard turned down the chance to return to Ibrox. The former Manchester United midfielder has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough in June.
Carrick led Middlesbrough to the Championship play-offs in his first season, but a poor run of form last term saw them finish 10th. He also served as interim manager at Manchester United, going unbeaten in three games.
Other candidates on Rangers' shortlist include former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, and ex-Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl. McKenna previously worked with Carrick at Manchester United.
The Scottish giants have had a dismal start to the season, winning just one of seven league games. They are nine points behind Celtic and 11 adrift of league leaders Hearts, with their European performances also under scrutiny.
Rangers' board admitted they 'did not get this right' after Russell Martin lasted only 123 days as manager. They said: 'We know achieving our goals will take time, but our performances and results have not been good enough.'
