Michael Carrick has been given a clear timeline to avoid the sack, while four Manchester United defenders face uncertain futures as the club's priorities for the next transfer window emerge.
The 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday extended United's winless run to six games in all competitions, leaving Carrick under pressure despite what he called a "fresh start" performance. United sit 13th after seven Premier League games, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League spots.
Carrick told to improve by January
Gary Neville has said Carrick cannot afford for United to still be mired in mid-table by January. Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: "Fifth [which will probably be enough for Champions League football] is a must for Michael Carrick to continue to grow and Manchester United continue to grow with investment."
"If they're 13th in January, he's got a problem because then you are what you are. Whereas I think it's still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, 'Okay, still early in the season.' You can't say that after 15 games."
Neville believes Carrick deserves more time in his first season as permanent boss but says United must improve soon, adding: "It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that."
Tough run of fixtures ahead
Carrick's side face a demanding schedule starting with Wednesday's Champions League clash away to Como, followed by Premier League games against Bournemouth, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool.
There is also scrutiny off the pitch following Lisandro Martinez's explosive TV interview, in which he called out director of football Jason Wilcox over the club's summer transfer business. The Argentine has since apologised and started against Leeds, but the tirade has shone a brighter spotlight on the next transfer window.
Defensive priorities put players at risk
United are prioritising centre-backs and left-backs in the squad rebuilding process, having bolstered midfield in the summer and attacking options 12 months earlier. The club wanted Lewis Hall but Newcastle were unwilling to sell and tied the full-back to a new long-term contract, making him look ungettable.
Martinez, out of contract next summer, has his future in doubt after his outburst. Harry Maguire, 33, is also out of contract at the end of the season, while Matthijs de Ligt has suffered injury problems, although he is available again after back surgery.
United could also strengthen their attacking options further, both through the middle and out wide, but for now defence appears to be the club's primary focus.
