Michael Carrick Addresses Paul Scholes' 'Guilty' Remark After Man Utd Criticism

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has responded to a scathing social media attack from former teammate Paul Scholes, who labelled him "guilty" for remaining at the club following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure. The criticism emerged after United's disappointing defeat to Newcastle, sparking a fresh wave of controversy at Old Trafford.

Scholes' Brutal Instagram Post Targets Carrick

Paul Scholes set social media alight with a brutally honest verdict on Manchester United's recent loss, directly aiming a swipe at Carrick in a now-deleted Instagram Story. "Michael has definitely got something special about him... cos United have been c**p last four games... night," Scholes wrote, referencing United's poor form under Carrick's interim management.

This is not the first time Scholes has publicly doubted Carrick's position. Back in 2021, he branded Carrick and fellow coaches Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan as disloyal for staying at the club after Solskjaer was dismissed. "I feel with Ole, he put a lot of trust into Michael, Kieran and Mike Phelan, which is why they shouldn't be at the club now," Scholes remarked at the time.

He added, "They're all good friends and they're good people but if I was them I'd feel guilty still working at the club after Ole put so much trust in them." This historical context adds depth to the current friction between the two United legends.

Carrick's Emotional Response and Relationship with Solskjaer

Assuming the interim role after Solskjaer's departure, Carrick was questioned about Scholes' remarks, revealing he had spoken with Solskjaer before accepting the position. "It's been an emotional few days," Carrick said. "The first person I spoke to after Ed Woodward offered me the role was Ole. I thought that was the right thing to do."

Carrick has maintained a close relationship with Solskjaer, recently confirming they spoke after he secured the United job earlier this year. "Yeah, I spoke to him," Carrick stated. "I'm close, we've been through a lot together, so he's been fully supportive and as you'd expect. He's some man and I respect him an awful lot. He wished us all the best and he was happy that we got the right result."

The pair played together extensively, with Carrick and Scholes featuring in 160 matches side by side during their playing careers, adding a personal layer to the professional criticism.

Ongoing Tensions and United's Future

This public spat highlights the ongoing tensions within Manchester United's camp as Carrick navigates his interim tenure until the season concludes. Scholes' comments reflect broader concerns about loyalty and performance at the club, with United struggling in recent games.

Carrick's response emphasises his respect for Solskjaer and the emotional weight of the situation, suggesting a focus on maintaining positive relationships despite external criticism. As United aims to improve results, this exchange underscores the high stakes and intense scrutiny facing the team and its management.
