Michael Carrick Backs Kobbie Mainoo for Continued Growth at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has delivered an optimistic forecast for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, suggesting there is "more to come" from the player as his resurgence at Old Trafford gains momentum. Mainoo, who faced uncertainty under previous boss Ruben Amorim, has now firmly re-established himself in the first-team setup, completing 90 minutes in each of the last four matches.

Earlier this season, Kobbie Mainoo's future at Manchester United appeared bleak, with the midfielder falling out of favour under Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim. Speculation even linked him with a potential transfer away from the club, including interest from Italian side Napoli. However, Carrick's arrival has sparked a dramatic turnaround, with Mainoo now playing a pivotal role in the team's recent performances.
Speaking after United's 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Carrick expressed his admiration for Mainoo's progress. "There's definitely more to come from him, that's just the age he's at, the stage he's at in his career you'd like to think, he's just starting out really essentially," Carrick stated. "He has got so much experience under his belt in big games and pressured situations, which is going to help him develop learning the game."
Learning from Experience and Managing Expectations
Carrick emphasised the importance of Mainoo's development alongside experienced teammates like Casemiro, noting that the young midfielder is absorbing valuable lessons unconsciously. "Playing next to Case [Casemiro] and learning off him, things that he's probably not even realising he's picking things up just by being next to him, as well as the other players around him, I think that's just part of his journey to learn and develop," he explained.
The manager also highlighted the need for patience and careful management of Mainoo's progression, acknowledging the natural fluctuations in form that young players often experience. "I'm really conscious that he's come in, he's played the four games and he's found his rhythm. Young players, they have times when they're up and then they might have a little dip. That's not all of a sudden he's good or he's a poor player, Kobbie is what he is," Carrick remarked.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Momentum
When asked how Mainoo has navigated a difficult season to reclaim his spot in the team, Carrick pointed to the player's resilience and ability. "There's no doubt of Kobbie's ability and what he can bring, he's still so young and let's be careful of not putting so much right on his shoulders and expecting so much of him. He's still learning the game," he said.
Carrick further praised Mainoo for quickly regaining his form after a period out of the side. "Because he's had the big high and then obviously didn't play for a bit, it's easy to think he's a lot older and more experienced probably than he is. But credit to him, he's come right in and find his rhythm with football, which is not easy after a period of time out and he's found that physically and mentally," he added.
Looking ahead, Carrick remains confident in Mainoo's potential for improvement, urging supporters to maintain realistic expectations. "We know he can handle the ball and hopefully over time, I'm sure he'll keep improving. We've got to be patient and not expect too much from him all the time," he concluded.
