Manchester United sit in the relegation zone after a dramatic 4-4 comeback draw with Aston Villa, leaving manager Michael Carrick's job on the brink.
The final game before the international break was seen as a make-or-break match for Carrick, despite the sensational 3-2 comeback win against Roma in midweek. Late heroics from Patrick Dorgu saved a draw at the death as United struck twice in injury time.
Another disastrous start
United found themselves 2-0 down inside four minutes, with Alysson and Nicolas Jackson both finding the net. It was the earliest United have ever gone 2-0 down in a Premier League game. The home fans, who staged more protests against the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, turned on the players, chanting 'You're not fit to wear the shirt'.
Alysson's strike was similar to Roma's opener, with the Brazilian left in too much room on the outside of Diogo Dalot. His powerful low shot went in through Senne Lammens' legs. Jackson then pounced on another moment Lammens would like to forget, as he parried Alysson's effort into the six-yard box.
United fight back
Like against Roma, United only started playing at two goals down. Bruno Fernandes netted a penalty on 16 minutes after Matheus Cunha was felled. Cunha and Amad both forced Zion Suzuki into full-stretch saves before Youri Tielemans scored his first goal for United in the 44th minute.
Amad played Noussair Mazraoui into space, and the full-back cut the ball back to the edge of the box where Tielemans fired through Suzuki. The half-time whistle brought a different reaction from the Stretford End, with fans roaring Carrick and his side into the tunnel.
Defending collapses again
Those hopes were virtually extinguished two minutes into the second half as Dalot's poor tackle brought down Alysson in the box, allowing John McGinn to restore the lead. Five minutes later, more bad defending allowed Leon Goretzka to score from point blank range after Lammens pushed Leny Yoro's header onto the bar.
United showed no sign of coming from behind again until Joshua Zirkzee turned in Patrick Dorgu's cross in injury time. Dorgu then headed in from a corner in the last minute of added time to rescue a point.
Whoever is in charge when club football returns will have to take the team to Anfield, where Liverpool will be waiting.
