New Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has ended the club's 25-year tradition of pre-season tours to far-flung destinations, opting instead for a European-based schedule this summer. The decision marks a significant shift in approach as Carrick prepares for his first full season in charge.
United have toured Asia, North America, and Australia every summer since 2002, but Carrick has chosen to keep the squad closer to home to reduce travel fatigue. The move is seen as an attempt to prioritise on-pitch performance over commercial gains, with the club aiming to return to Champions League football next season.
The pre-season schedule includes six matches across five countries, starting with a fixture against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18. Further matches include Rosenborg in Norway, Atletico Madrid in Sweden, Paris Saint-Germain in Sweden, Leeds United in Dublin, and concluding with AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 15.
Sporting director Jason Wilcox said: 'We're excited to be concluding our pre-season tour in Wroclaw, Poland, with a big game against AC Milan. These matches will provide strong preparation for the 2026-27 season and a valuable opportunity to connect with our incredible fans across Europe.'
While overseas tours have been lucrative for the club, some supporters have criticised the focus on financial gain. Carrick's decision to stay in Europe is expected to be welcomed by fans who prioritise success on the pitch, particularly after two seasons without Champions League football.
