Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United's ownership and manager Ruben Amorim following the team's 3-1 defeat to Brentford. The former Liverpool defender claimed that Amorim remains in his post only because the club's hierarchy are reluctant to admit another mistake after a series of poor decisions.
United fell behind to two first-half goals from Igor Thiago at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Benjamin Sesko scoring his first goal for the club before Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty. Mathias Jensen sealed the win for Brentford in stoppage time, leaving United with four losses in the Premier League this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher said: "I think he's still in a job because the powers-at-be have made so many mistakes that they almost don't want to admit right now they have made another. This has been a disaster for Amorim and United. The quicker they make a decision on the manager we are only waiting for the inevitable."
Carragher suggested that any competent manager could guide United to European places, and that the club's summer signings would be better suited to a traditional back-four system. "What he did at Sporting was really special, but it will be better for everyone to just shake hands and move on," he added.
Despite the poor run, United's owners remain committed to Amorim and have not identified potential replacements, according to reports. Amorim himself said he is not concerned about his job, telling Match of the Day: "I am never concerned about my job... It is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here."
