Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the debate over the Premier League's best midfielder, stating that Arsenal's Declan Rice just edges out Chelsea's Moises Caicedo. The Sky Sports pundit disagreed with colleague Gary Neville, who had earlier praised Caicedo as the league's top midfield talent.
Speaking on the 'Extra Time' show, Carragher acknowledged Caicedo's quality but gave the edge to Rice. 'Oh he is very close, he wouldn't be the best for me,' Carragher said. 'If you are talking all round midfielder, Declan Rice would just pip Caicedo for me, I think he's just got a little bit of extra quality with the ball.'
The debate follows impressive performances from both players at the weekend. Rice scored against his former club West Ham, while Caicedo opened the scoring with a stunning strike as Chelsea beat Liverpool. Neville, speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, had declared Caicedo as the best midfielder in the league at this moment.
'He's the best midfield player in the league at this moment in time. And I think I'm comfortable saying that,' Neville said, adding that Caicedo has been performing at a high level since Christmas last season. Carragher, however, noted that Rice's overall quality with the ball gives him the slight advantage.
