Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on Viktor Gyokeres' suitability for Arsenal, suggesting the Sweden international is not good enough to help the Gunners win the Premier League. The former Liverpool defender made the remarks after Arsenal's 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, which strengthened their hold on top spot.
Gyokeres, signed from Sporting Lisbon for £55 million in the summer, has scored seven goals in 21 appearances across all competitions but has netted only once in his previous six league outings. Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher argued that Gabriel Jesus, who is returning to full fitness, is a superior option.
“I’m a huge fan of Jesus. I think maybe the only negative of the night for Arsenal is that Gyokeres shouldn’t be starting when they’ve got players like this,” Carragher said. “In a couple of games’ time when Jesus is a little bit more up to speed, he’s a better player than Gyokeres. That’s a fact.”
Carragher also compared the forward to Kai Havertz and noted that Manchester City possess Erling Haaland. “Him or Havertz as the central striker for Arsenal is a better player than Gyokeres. Gyokeres is really game and I admire him for taking that penalty against Everton, but I think he just lacks that finesse and quality when you think about what they have on the bench.”
Arsenal’s next fixtures include a trip to Bournemouth and a home match against Liverpool later this month.
