Carragher: Arsenal best defensively in Europe after Anfield win

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal are arguably “the best team defensively” in Europe following their 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Kai Havertz’s first-half goal was enough for the Gunners to claim their first Premier League victory at Anfield in 14 years, moving the reigning champions three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Nervy moments and missed chances

Arsenal took the lead as early as the 16th minute but had to survive some nervy moments to leave Merseyside with a statement victory.

Alexander Isak was unfortunate not to win Liverpool a penalty when his shirt was pulled by Jurrien Timber in the box, while Alexis Mac Allister spurned a glorious chance shortly before the break when he headed over from close range.

Although Liverpool were on top for large periods, they failed to seriously test Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, registering not a single shot on target despite having 17 attempts.

Carragher praises Arsenal's rearguard

Reflecting on the game, Carragher heaped praise on Arsenal's defence, pointing out how impressed he has been with Mikel Arteta’s side defensively this season even without William Saliba.

“No, it was a brilliant game and both teams can take a lot from it,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “Liverpool played really well.

“They didn't do enough but you are playing against, defensively, the best team in this country, arguably in Europe and that is without the best centre-back in the world in Saliba.

“When you think about Arsenal winning titles, especially in '89 and '91 with Tony Adams and that famous back four, I think we're getting close to putting this back four up against that and in that conversation.”

“To come to Anfield and be put under that much pressure and not have a shot on target from the opposition, or Liverpool not to have a big chance given the money they've spent on their attack is absolutely outstanding.”
