Cardiff City head into transfer deadline day expecting a busy final few hours as Brian Barry-Murphy looks to put the finishing touches to his squad. The Bluebirds have until 11pm tonight to complete their transfer business, with a striker and winger still the two principal priorities, while the addition of a full-back would also be a nice bonus to cap off the summer.
Four senior additions already made
Cardiff have already made four senior additions this summer, with Jack Moylan, Nathan Trott, Calum Scanlon and Krystian Bielik arriving, but the club's recruitment team are expected to be working deep into Tuesday as they look to add further quality. Since Bielik's arrival, the intention has been to make two or three more additions that genuinely improve the squad rather than simply add numbers, and the final day could therefore prove crucial.
Bielik's arrival from West Brom last week has altered the equation slightly. The Poland international can play at centre-back or as a holding midfielder, but Barry-Murphy has indicated he sees him primarily in the latter position. That means Cardiff's need for defensive reinforcements has not disappeared entirely, with a right-back now being explored.
Defensive options and attacking targets
Perry Ng remains the undisputed first choice in that position, while Ronan Kpakio is his understudy after making a breakthrough last season and earning international recognition with Wales. The club are understood to be considering both loan and permanent options for the position, although it remains behind the attacking additions on the priority list.
The biggest areas Cardiff want to address are at the top end of the pitch. A striker is wanted to provide competition and cover for Yousef Salech, while a winger is being sought to bring greater pace, dynamism and directness to Barry-Murphy's attacking options. Cardiff have been patient in their search for the right profiles and have identified potential targets at Premier League clubs, with loans increasingly appearing the most likely route for those positions.
Manager confident of further business
The hope is that players could become available as clubs higher up the pyramid finalise their own squads, meaning Cardiff's business was always likely to accelerate as the deadline approached. Barry-Murphy offered little detail on the club's plans after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Sheffield United but made it clear further business was coming.
"I probably don't want it to be over too quickly so that we can actually do something," he said when asked whether there had been any movement in the market. And when asked whether he was confident Cardiff would get the deals they need over the line, the manager replied: "Yeah, I hope so. I feel confident." He added: "We've been pretty consistent. We want to improve the squad. The players that we've brought in, we feel have done that. But there's more to come."
Outgoings and injury concerns
The expectation is therefore for Cardiff's biggest activity to come today, with the club having deliberately avoided rushing into deals simply to bolster the numbers. The Bluebirds have already had to contend with a series of injuries this season, including the absence of Will Fish, while other defensive options have also been limited. That has placed additional emphasis on recruitment, but the club have remained committed to finding players who fit the profiles identified by Barry-Murphy and his recruitment team.
There could also be movement in the opposite direction before the 11pm cut-off. There is tentative interest in Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, with Newport County and Shrewsbury Town understood to have checked on the young forward, although neither move was advanced at the time of the previous update. Cardiff would also ideally like to find loan destinations for Eli King, Dakarai Mafico and Kion Etete. Colchester had shown interest in Etete earlier in the window, although nothing came of that at the time. The prospect of a senior departure has been tentatively mooted, largely on social media, over the last couple of days, however as of yet there's nothing to substantiate such claims.
For supporters, then, the key question on deadline day is how many of Cardiff's remaining targets can be turned into completed deals. The club have already made four additions, but with a striker and winger wanted and a full-back also being considered, there is still plenty of work to do before the 11pm deadline. And after Barry-Murphy's insistence that "there's more to come", Cardiff fans can expect a long day of waiting, negotiations and potentially a flurry of late announcements before the window finally slams shut.
