The full Carabao Cup first round draw has been confirmed after Crawley Town beat York City in the last preliminary round fixture. The first round proper gets underway this week, prior to the EFL season kicking off in a change to the calendar.
70 clubs in round one
Round one will feature 70 clubs, including two winners from the preliminary rounds and the other 68 EFL sides. The preliminary round was required as a result of the nine Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Sunderland, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace – qualifying for Europe.
Premier League sides who are in European competition automatically move into the third round, set to be played in September. Because of this, a preliminary round was required to ensure 32 teams will then be in the Carabao Cup pot.
Crawley and Rochdale advance
Crawley progressed to round one of the Carabao Cup on Monday night with a 2-0 victory over York City at the LNER Community Stadium. As a result, they booked a first-round trip to Championship side Watford this Saturday.
Rochdale were the other team to progress, beating Tranmere on penalties last Saturday. They will face Bradford City in an away fixture this Saturday too.
Regionalised draw
The first round is regionalised into Northern and Southern sections. The second round of the Carabao Cup, which will be played midweek in the week commencing August 24, will see the 11 Premier League clubs not competing in European competitions enter the fray.
