Former England manager Fabio Capello has issued a stark warning to current boss Thomas Tuchel, stating he must urgently tackle the Three Lions' deep-seated habit of playing "with fear" ahead of this summer's World Cup. Capello, who managed England for five years between 2007 and 2012, brings unique insight from his experience leading the national team at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Capello's Direct Experience with England's Pressure
The 79-year-old Italian guided England to the round of 16 in 2010, where they suffered a controversial 4-1 defeat to Germany that featured Frank Lampard's infamous disallowed "ghost goal." Despite England's subsequent improvements under Gareth Southgate—reaching the semi-finals in 2018 and quarter-finals in 2022—Capello believes a fundamental psychological issue persists.
The Core Problem: Fatigue and Fear
In an interview with BBC Sport, Capello pinpointed the dual challenges facing the squad. "This is the problem for England. They are tired and they fear. The manager, he has to cancel these two things," he stated emphatically. This observation comes despite England's recent tournament successes, including consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024.
England lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties at Wembley and fell 2-1 to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin. Capello specifically referenced the 2020 final, noting how anxiety undermined their performance after taking an early lead. "I remember the game against Italy. They are winning after 10-15 minutes and after they don't play. They play with fear," he recalled.
A Historical Burden Since 1966
This sense of fear has haunted English football since their sole major tournament victory at the 1966 World Cup. Recent concerning friendly results against Uruguay and Japan have reignited worries that the England shirt has become "heavy" for players once more. Defender Marc Guehi exemplified this pressure following England's surprising defeat to Japan at Wembley.
Guehi admitted to ITV: "It's not easy putting the shirt on. You play against teams that are well-drilled and disciplined. They qualified for the World Cup as well, and they want to prove a point when they come here. I will reiterate, it is important that we stick together, learn from this moment, and move forward."
Tuchel's Critical World Cup Challenge
With the World Cup kicking off across the USA, Canada, and Mexico on June 11, and England facing Croatia in their opening match a week later, Tuchel has limited time to address this psychological barrier. Capello's comments highlight that tactical preparation alone may be insufficient if the team's mindset remains burdened by historical expectations and tournament pressure.
The former manager's analysis suggests that overcoming this ingrained fear could be the decisive factor in whether England can finally convert their talented squad into tournament winners, breaking a drought that has lasted nearly six decades.
