Brentford Manager Keith Andrews Hails Macclesfield After Narrow FA Cup Escape
Brentford Boss Praises Macclesfield After FA Cup Scare

Brentford manager Keith Andrews made a heartfelt visit to the Macclesfield dressing room to pay tribute to the part-time players after his Premier League side narrowly avoided a monumental FA Cup upset at Moss Rose. The National League North team, who famously stunned holders Crystal Palace just over a month ago, pushed Brentford to the limit in a tense fourth-round clash.

A Display of Respect After a Tense Battle

Andrews was seen heading straight for the home dressing room following Brentford's 1-0 victory, where he was warmly applauded out after celebrating Macclesfield's immense effort. The Bees boss expressed deep admiration for the spirit and determination shown by the lower-league side, who defied the 116 league positions separating the two teams with a tenacious first-half performance.

Macclesfield's Remarkable Journey

"I've a lot of respect for the way they play and the spirit they have, it was very impressive," Andrews stated. "I told them what respect I have for what they've achieved and the journey they've been on. I love the English football pyramid—I've played and coached in much of it—and I love what it stands for."

He added, "This club is on a really good journey and I love stories like that. It fills my heart. They were immense and they gave us a proper cup tie that most people would have enjoyed... but I can't say I did!"

The Challenge of Contrasting Fixtures

Andrews admitted the significant challenge of pivoting from facing Premier League leaders Arsenal to taking on sixth-tier Macclesfield. "Arsenal to Macclesfield... it's a big shift, for sure," he acknowledged. "There's no point saying otherwise, because the facts are that Arsenal are top of the Premier League and Macclesfield are level six, so it's a huge shift."

"Your mentality gets tested and it's a very different type of game—everyone bar Brentford fans wanted us to lose and that's very different for us," Andrews reflected.

Macclesfield's Pride in Performance

Macclesfield manager John Rooney, younger brother of former England star Wayne, expressed immense pride in his team and gratitude for Andrews' gesture. "I couldn't be any prouder. Days like this are why you are involved," Rooney said.

"It's an unbelievable touch by their manager to come into our dressing room after full-time. He spoke highly of us—of myself, the players, and the thing he saw was a real togetherness we had about us," Rooney continued. "We're a close-knit group and in football I think that takes you a long way."

Replicating the Crystal Palace Upset

Rooney highlighted the achievement of competing with two Premier League teams this season. "I'm proud to go and replicate the Crystal Palace performance. For a club of our level to go toe to toe with two Premier League teams is incredible," he remarked.

Regarding defender Sam Heathcote, whose own goal in the 70th minute proved decisive, Rooney offered support. "All the lads are a little bit down and Sam's the same. That's natural, they've just lost a football match and it will take a little time but they all know what they've achieved."

The Match Decider

Brentford finally found their rhythm in the second half after a subdued first period, but still required a stroke of fortune to secure their place in the fifth round against West Ham. The breakthrough came when Heathcote inadvertently headed into his own net, compounded by Lewis Fensome's injury which left Macclesfield with ten men for the closing stages.

This result keeps Brentford's FA Cup dreams alive while Macclesfield exit the competition with heads held high, having once again demonstrated the magic and unpredictability that defines the world's oldest football tournament.
