The basketball world is in mourning following the sudden passing of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke at the age of 29. The news was confirmed by the team on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the NBA community.
A Life Cut Short
Clarke, who had been with the Grizzlies since being drafted in 2019, was described by teammates and coaches as one of the kindest individuals both on and off the court. 'He was the gentlest soul I have ever met,' said Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins in a statement. 'His passion for the game was matched only by his compassion for others.'
The cause of death has not been disclosed, and the team has requested privacy for the family during this difficult time. Clarke was known for his high-flying dunks and defensive prowess, averaging 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game over his career.
Tributes Pour In
Fellow NBA stars took to social media to express their grief. LeBron James tweeted, 'Heartbreaking. Brandon was a bright light. Rest in peace, young king.' Ja Morant, Clarke's teammate, posted a series of photos with the caption, 'My brother. I can't believe this. Love you forever.'
The Grizzlies organization announced that they will honor Clarke's memory with a tribute during their next home game. Fans have already begun leaving flowers and jerseys outside the FedExForum.
Clarke is survived by his parents and two siblings. The family has asked that donations be made to the Brandon Clarke Foundation, which supported youth basketball programs in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada.
