Bournemouth Race to Upgrade Stadium Ahead of First European Campaign
Bournemouth Race to Upgrade Stadium for European Debut

Bournemouth are facing a race against time to complete upgrades to the Vitality Stadium ahead of their debut European campaign next season. The club secured European qualification for the first time in their 127-year history following a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Tuesday, which also handed the Premier League title to Arsenal.

Provisional Licence Granted

Uefa has granted Bournemouth a provisional stadium licence after meeting club officials in April to review their redevelopment project. However, improvements are required due to the limited size of hospitality areas and broadcasting facilities. A visit from Uefa's stadium inspection and commercial operations team is scheduled for next month.

Expansion Plans Under Review

Club sources have confirmed that their plan is to use the Vitality Stadium for European fixtures next season. Bournemouth have submitted plans for a phased expansion that would almost double the current capacity of 11,286 to over 20,000. The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council planning committee is due to discuss the proposal on Friday, focusing on the demolition and replacement of the South Stand. The meeting was originally scheduled for 11 May, raising concerns about potential delays.

Infrastructure Improvements Needed

Bournemouth do not necessarily need to increase capacity to meet Uefa requirements—Bodø/Glimt competed in the Champions League this season with an 8,000-seat stadium—but infrastructure improvements are essential to gain a Uefa category rating. Planned work this summer includes creating a permanent outside broadcast compound, installing new perimeter fencing and turnstiles, and resurfacing the pitch.

The club has been forced to scale back some building work. Initially, they intended to add about 1,500 seats before next season by filling gaps in all four corners, but that figure has been reduced to 800, with only the north-west and south-east corners to be completed.

European Qualification Scenarios

Bournemouth are guaranteed at least a Europa League place, but they also have two possible routes to Champions League qualification. If Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg and finish fifth in the Premier League, the sixth-placed side would qualify for the Champions League. Bournemouth will secure sixth place if they avoid defeat at Nottingham Forest or if Brighton fail to beat Manchester United. They could also finish fifth on goal difference if they win and Liverpool lose at home to Brentford, though Liverpool's goal difference is superior by six.

The Premier League's Champions League and Europa League qualifiers will enter the league stage next season, giving Bournemouth additional time to complete necessary work.
