Violent Clashes Mar Champions League Build-Up in Madrid
Violent scenes erupted in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night as Benfica supporters clashed with Spanish police forces outside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. The disturbances occurred just hours before Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League last-16 with a 2-1 victory over the Portuguese side.
Police Confront Supporters in Chaotic Scenes
Footage circulating online captured the chaotic moments as riot police confronted Benfica fans in the build-up to the crucial European tie. In one particularly disturbing clip, supporters can be seen being forcibly pushed back by officers, with several individuals ending up on the ground and engaging in physical altercations with police personnel.
Additional videos showed mounted police units challenging the traveling supporters, creating a tense atmosphere in the streets surrounding the famous stadium. Reports have emerged suggesting that some fans required medical treatment following the clashes, though specific details regarding injuries remain unconfirmed by official sources.
Racism Controversy Overshadows Footballing Contest
The match itself was played against the backdrop of a significant racism controversy that had dominated headlines in the preceding days. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr had alleged he was racially abused by Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni shortly after scoring the only goal in the first-leg encounter between the two sides.
In response to these allegations, UEFA imposed a provisional sanction on Prestianni on Monday, ruling the Argentinian international out of the return fixture. Despite Benfica's appeal against this decision, European football's governing body dismissed the Portuguese club's case on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before kick-off.
A UEFA statement confirmed: "Mr Gianluca Prestianni remains provisionally suspended for the next UEFA club competition match for which he would otherwise be eligible." The winger had nevertheless traveled to Madrid as part of Benfica's squad.
Stadium Displays Support Amid Tensions
Inside the Bernabeu, Real Madrid fans displayed banners with messages of solidarity for Vinicius Jr before the match commenced. As the players took to the field, two powerful announcements were made over the stadium's public address system: "No to racism" and "Respect."
Despite these displays of unity, sections of the away supporters booed Vinicius whenever he touched the ball during the match. The Brazilian international would ultimately have the last laugh, scoring the decisive goal that secured Real Madrid's progression in the competition.
Footballing Drama Unfolds on the Pitch
On the field, Benfica took an early lead through Rafa Silva, only for Aurelien Tchouameni to equalize for the hosts just two minutes later. With ten minutes of normal time remaining, Vinicius Jr continued his excellent recent form by scoring his sixth goal in five games, securing Real Madrid's 3-1 aggregate victory.
Former England international Joe Cole praised the Brazilian's performance on TNT Sports after the match, stating: "It had to be that man Vinicius. He was brilliant over both legs, his finish was superb." Cole added: "Real need those players back and they need them back quick. They'll be there or thereabouts."
Real Madrid will now face either Manchester City or Sporting in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the draw scheduled to take place on Friday morning.
