England's cricket icon Ben Stokes has candidly shared the harrowing details of a recent accident that left him with severe facial injuries, admitting he feels fortunate to have escaped a potentially catastrophic outcome. The incident occurred in February while Stokes was coaching academy players at his county team, Durham.
Serious Facial Injuries and Surgical Intervention
The Test captain required urgent surgery to address a broken cheekbone and other significant facial damage after being struck directly in the face by a cricket ball. Stokes described the situation as "pretty nasty" but noted it was likely the best possible result given the circumstances. He emphasized the gravity of the event, revealing that a slight deviation in the ball's trajectory could have had dire consequences.
"Just a couple of inches one way or the other, I might not be here doing this interview," Stokes explained during an in-house discussion with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). He expressed gratitude for his recovery, stating, "All things considered, although I had pretty major facial surgery to sort it out... I've got out quite lucky. So pretty thankful for that."
Recovery Timeline and Return to Cricket
The injury disrupted Stokes' preparations for the upcoming season, setting back his training schedule by approximately a month. He has since devised a revised plan to regain fitness, aiming to participate in two County Championship matches next month. Stokes downplayed any significant rift, highlighting their shared ambition for success. "As similar as me and Brendon are, we're also dissimilar in other areas," he noted. "But the thing we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can. We agree 95 per cent of the time, but for the five per cent where we have different views, we talk it through and end up getting to where we want to be."
He dismissed claims of misalignment as an overstatement, asserting that complete agreement on every issue is unrealistic in any professional partnership.
