Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich has announced the death of his six-year-old son, Len, after a long and serious illness. The 36-year-old said the decision to go public with the news was difficult but necessary for his family to create clarity.
In a statement, Ulreich said: 'It is with deep sadness that we would like to announce today that our son Len passed away a few weeks ago after a long, serious illness.' He thanked his family, friends, and Bayern Munich for their support, and asked for privacy from the public and media.
Len was born in 2018 during Ulreich's first spell at Bayern Munich. The goalkeeper left for Hamburg in 2020 but returned to the club a year later. He has made over 100 appearances for Bayern across his two spells, featuring twice last season as the team won the Bundesliga title.
Fans from Bayern and other clubs have expressed their condolences on social media, with one writing: 'May he rest in peace... stay strong, Sven and family.' Another said: 'The worst thing that can happen to any parent. Sending lots of strength.'
Ulreich was spotted in an open training session on Wednesday as the team prepares for the new season, which starts with the DFL-Supercup against Stuttgart on August 16, followed by a league match against RB Leipzig.
