Barry's brace inspires Everton comeback win over Coventry

Thierno Barry scored twice as Everton came from behind to beat Coventry City 3-1 at Goodison Park, extending their winning run to three games in eight days.

The 24-year-old forward headed home an equaliser before bundling in a second within five minutes, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall adding a third late on. The win came after Coventry had taken a deserved lead through Yann Gboho seven minutes into the second half.

Barry's quickfire double turns the game

Barry's first goal came after Vitalii Mykolenko's cross from the left found him at the back post, with Jay Dasilva crumpling to the floor. Within five minutes, Barry outjumped Dasilva at the far post to bundle the ball home off his midriff, taking his season tally to double figures.

The second goal was not a classic, and former Everton boss Frank Lampard believes it should not have stood, but the Everton supporters serenaded Barry with chants of his name as he performed his trademark celebration dance in front of the South Stand.

Controversy and resilience

The night was not without controversy. Coventry could have been awarded a penalty when James Tarkowski pulled the hair of Caleb Yirenkyi, but a VAR review decided against it. Lampard's frustrations turned to smiles when Gboho scored, after controlling the ball with three Everton defenders around him in the box and poking it past Jordan Pickford.

Everton had been crying out for an experienced head in a first half lacking quality, with on-loan Manchester City player Jack Grealish missed despite his continued absence. Jack Rudoni played in Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who fired straight at Pickford, before the Sky Blues took the lead.

Dewsbury-Hall seals the win

Dewsbury-Hall, who had driven forward to create the chance for Tyler Dibling that led to Barry's equaliser, made the result safe with a fine angled finish nine minutes from time, just hours after receiving another England snub from Thomas Tuchel.

Barry missed a chance to take the matchball home when he headed wide from inside the box in stoppage time, but there was still time for him to hear his name sung again when he charged down Torp. He has now scored in three successive games for the first time for Everton and has six in his last seven in all competitions.
