Manchester United's struggles deepened as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, with Pablo Barrios scoring after just 53 seconds and Ademola Lookman adding a second late on. The loss, at the Metropolitano, extended United's dismal run, which has seen them suffer their worst start in the Premier League in 40 years.
Head coach Michael Carrick had insisted before the match that his players would embrace the challenge and that a reaction was coming, saying he had looked at them and was sure of it. Instead, United were behind within the first minute and never recovered, with the early opener from Barrios and a second from Lookman condemning them to another defeat.
Early Blow and Missed Chances
The opening goal came after Lee Kang-in's pass sent Álex Baena into space on the left. Baena cut into the area and laid the ball across for Barrios, whose shot deflected off Ayden Heaven and into the net. Barrios held up six fingers in tribute to club captain Koke, whose mother had died hours before kick-off, as supporters around the Metropolitano roared.
United did find a foothold and could have equalised. Bryan Mbeumo had two clear chances in quick succession, the first going wide and the second stopped by Jan Oblak, while Carlos Baleba headed straight at the keeper from the resulting corner. Bruno Fernandes also struck the bar and put an opportunity wide, but the chances went unconverted.
Atlético Dominate and United Crumble
Atlético asserted themselves with pace and conviction, moving the ball in a way United could not match. By half-time, they had enjoyed 66% possession, and Álex Grimaldo rattled a free-kick off the bar. Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out for a Marcos Llorente handball in the buildup, and Julián Álvarez volleyed against a post early in the second half.
United's best chance came when Youri Tielemans found Bruno Fernandes, but the captain lifted the ball past Oblak and wide. Fernandes later swung a shot against the bar, but the match turned decisively on 74 minutes. Jonathan David ran through on a Morten Hjulmand ball, and Leny Yoro, grappling with him, brought him down. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially played on, allowing David to scramble the ball to Lookman, but after a video review, Yoro was shown a red card.
Late Second and a Harsh Red Card
The decision felt harsh but proved decisive. Three minutes later, Grimaldo slotted a pass to David inside the area, and although his shot was saved by Senne Lammens, Lookman was there to score. Heaven and Fernandes were removed, and United were left with nothing to fight for, the promised reaction postponed for another day.
