Australia fell to a 1-0 defeat to Venezuela in a World Cup preparation friendly at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium, with Jesús Ramírez scoring the only goal in the 38th minute. The result marked the Socceroos’ second consecutive loss under Tony Popovic, following an 11-game unbeaten start to his tenure.
Venezuela dominated possession, holding 66% by the final whistle, and pressed Australia aggressively from the outset. The Socceroos struggled to build momentum, with Popovic acknowledging missed early chances: “We had some great opportunities early in the game that we really should have scored, and I’m sure the game would have been different.”
Debutant goalkeeper Patrick Beach impressed with several saves, but could not prevent Ramírez’s tap-in after Ender Echenique rounded another debutant, centreback Kai Trewin. The goal capped a period of Venezuelan pressure, with Beach denying Ramírez earlier and Gleiker Mendoza and Echenique both going close.
Australia fielded three debutants in Beach, Trewin, and Paul Okon-Engstler – the first time since December 2012. Popovic made changes at half-time, replacing left wingback Craig Goodwin with Callum Elder after Venezuela exploited the space behind him. The return of Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree from injury off the bench offered a silver lining.
“We probably didn’t win as many of the duels and the second balls,” Popovic said. “That was difficult for us. Then it’s hard to break that momentum.” The defeat follows a 2-1 loss to the United States last month, with Popovic hoping the experimental lineup gains valuable experience.
