Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on Martin Odegaard after the Norwegian's impressive performances for Arsenal, but the club faces an uphill battle to secure his permanent signature from Real Madrid. The 22-year-old joined the Gunners on loan in January after growing frustrated with a lack of opportunities under Zinedine Zidane, but the deal contains no option to buy.
Odegaard made his first Premier League start at the weekend in a 4-2 win over Leeds United, linking up well with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. Arteta admitted he has been impressed with the midfielder's leadership qualities and believes he has the potential to become one of the world's best players.
“He’s got the potential,” Arteta said ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Benfica. “I followed him very closely when he was at Real Sociedad and he was really impressive over there for long periods. He's a player that I really like and still has huge potential to become even better.”
Arsenal chiefs are now working to persuade Odegaard to turn his back on his Real Madrid dream, but the Spanish giants are reluctant to let him go. Odegaard himself remained coy when asked about his future, telling Norwegian TV2: “You never know what is going to happen. But for now, I am just focusing on doing my best this season.”
Arteta has been particularly impressed with Odegaard's personality and work ethic since his arrival. “He’s a really focused and humble boy that was really keen to join,” the Arsenal boss explained. “He’s a nice guy, the players like him, the staff like him, and I’ve been very impressed with his leadership. On the pitch, he commands the high press and shows personality.”
Arsenal will continue their efforts to secure Odegaard on a permanent deal, but convincing Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to sell could prove a significant challenge.
